Abstract
<PICT:0914951/III/1> A coating apparatus comprises a variable speed pump 7 which supplies material to a two-way valve 18 which either feeds it to a spreading nozzle 4 or returns it to the pump 7, the two-way valve being actuated by cam means in conjunction with the movement of an endless conveyer 3 carrying the supports, e.g. trays 2 on to which the material is to be extruded. Pump 7 is driven through an infinitely variable speed gear. Nozzle 4 is lifted clear of trays 2 by cams 17, push rods 21 and pivoted arms 19 which simultaneously control the flow of material through the two-way valve 18 by further pivoted arms 25 and links 27, 28. The material may be jam, butter-cream &c.
