Abstract

914,873. Unwinding. SIGNODE STEEL STRAPPING CO. July 4, 1961 [July 11, 1960], No. 24078/61. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for unwinding strip includes a rotatable support for a coil having a thickness greater than the strip width, the convolutions criss-crossing, and a disc providing a generally cylindrical surface about which a coil, of a thickness equal to the width of the strip may be formed by withdrawal of strip from the first coil, the withdrawal of strip from the centre of the second coil rotating the coil support and the disc upon the attainment of a predetermined number of convolutions of the second coil, an intermediate ring interposed between the coil support and the disc and about which the strip moves in being transferred from the first coil to the second coil raising the convolutions of strip to lift out cross-over convolutions before they become tangled. Strip from the inside of a coil 17 on a support 12 journalled on a fixed post 20 passes over a ring 54, coaxial with the post 20, to be wound in the form of a flat coil on a disc 60 secured to the ring 54, strip from the interior of this flat ooil being withdrawn through an arcuate slot 44 in a stripper plate 36 secured to the post 20 and through a guide 50. Initially, as the strip is withdrawn a spring 82 keeps a latch 66 on the disc 60 locked to the post 20. After the strip has built up into several convolutions on the disc 60 a shoe 78 on the latch 66 is forced by the convolutions to release the latch 66, thus allowing the disc 60 and ring 54 to rotate, whereupon a latch 94 on the ring 54 drops into a hole 100 in the support 12 to rotate this support with the disc and ring. As the rotational speed increases the inner convolutions on the disc 60 are fed out or loosened sufficiently to allow the latch 66 to relock the disc 60 and ring 54, the reel 12 then rotating the latch 94 out of its way and slowing down or coasting to a stop.
