Abstract

770,545. Winding toroidal coils. HOWE, H. June 30, 1955 [July 6, 1954], No. 19726/54. Class 83 (4). A machine for winding wire on annular cores comprises a winding element adapted to be rotated around the core in a plane at right angles to that of the core, and a shuttle mounted rotatably on the winding element for holding a supply of wire which is wound on to the shuttle during the initial part of the coil winding operation and is withdrawn from the interior of the shuttle for winding on to the core. A magnet core 9 to be wound is supported and rotated by adjustable vertical flanged rollers 10, 10a, 11, the rollers 10, 10a being rotated by a motor 8 through a variablespeed friction drive 17, 18 and cross-shaft 14 and the roller 11 being urged by a spring 25 to press the core against the rollers 10, 10a. A winding ring 1, supported by guide pulleys 2 and rotated through the core by a belt 6, carries rollers 33 spaced around it which support a shuttle comprising two spaced ring elements 34, 35, which together have a V-sectioned peripheral. groove for the wire. To wind the core 9, the free end of wire from a supply 37 is passed around the shuttle 34, 35, on the rollers 33, then through the space 36 between the elements 34, 35, over a roller 33, and over a tension device 40, comprising two spring-urged cupped washers 61, Fig. 3, to the core 9 to which it is anchored. The core and the winding ring 1 are then rotated and wire is drawn from the interior of the shuttle 34, 35 through the space 36 to wind on the core, while wire from the supply 37 is wound on to the shuttle. After sufficient wire has been wound on the shuttle the supply is cut and the end anchored at 41 to the shuttle element 35. The winding of the core then continues. To insert or remove the core 9 in or from the machine a pulley 2 is moved up a slot 53 to slacken the belt 6, a sector 65 is unlocked from the ring 1 and removed and sectors 66, 67 are removed from the shuttle elements 35, 34.
