In a wire coiling machine, the wire 32 is drawn through a central passage 35 and a transverse aperture 61 in a vertically mounted rotatable shaft 1 by a flier 33 which winds the wire on a drum 8 rotatably attached to the lower end of the shaft 1 and held against rotation by magnetic means 18, 25 arranged to allow movement of wire coils from the drum 8 to a receiver underneath the block. As applied to a wire drawing machine, the drawing die 40 is secured at the top of the shaft 1 and is fed from a pipe 45 with lubricating liquid that discharges centrifugally into a container 44. The wire 32 guided by pulleys 34, 37 is wound by a pulley 33 on a disc 36 secured to the shaft 1 about the tapered drum 8, and the coils move down over a skirt 17 attached to the drum. A soft iron bar 18 co-operates with electro or permanent magnets 25 to prevent rotation of the drum. Alternatively permanent or electromagnets in the drum 8 may co-operate with external magnets or electromagnets. The skirt 17 and drum 8 may be of magnetic or other material and may be gapped or thinned to prevent leakage of magnetic flux. In a modification, the drawing die is omitted and the wire is annealed before being handled by the machine.
