Abstract

914,680. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 23, 1961 [Oct. 27, 1960], No. 36862/60. Class 39 (4). A nuclear reactor has a liquid moderator contained within a vessel provided with inlet means for at least one stream of gas which passes through at least part of the moderator, and an outlet means for exhausting the gas from the vessel. The vessel 10 is divided into a moderating region 10a, a low-pressure region 22 and a high-pressure region 10b. The blower 18 circulates gas e.g. helium from the region 22 through the conduit 16 to the dump tank 14 and region 10b or to the conduit 19. The valves 25 and 30 allow the gas to enter the perforated pipes 23 and the rising bubbles have the effect of reducing the density of the moderator in the vicinity of each gas stream and hence affects the local neutron flux. If it is desired to control the flux over only a part of the reactor then the bubbles 28 may be intercepted by a curved vane 26 which guides gas to the escape pipe 27. The flow of bubbles may be adjusted by the valves 25 and 30, and the flux is also varied from one part of the moderator to the next by varying the spacing of the holes 24. In an emergency shut-down of the reactor the pipes 23 may be used to pass some of the gas from the region 10b to the space 22 and so hasten the emptying of the moderator chamber 10a, the valve 20 being open. The moderator may be heavy or ordinary water or an organic liquid and may or may not act as a coolant.
