Abstract
914,570. Rocket motors. AVIATION, MINISTER OF. Jan. 13, 1959 [Jan. 31, 1958], No. 3359/58. Class 9 (2). [Also in Groups XII and XXVI] The combustion chamber of a jet reaction rocket or the surface of a missile is cooled by the evaporation of a volatile cooling fluid, the vapour from which is urged through a porous wall by its own pressure. The rate of cooling is self regulating in that the rate of vapour flow is proportional to the heating of the surface concerned. The rocket combustion chamber is formed with double walls, the inner one of which is porous and between which the cooling fluid is stored. The fluid is vaporized by the chamber heat and the wall is cooled by the vapour forced inwards through the porous structure. In a rocket motor the pressure varies with axial position and the coolant space is therefore divided into annular zones, each of which supplies coolant separately. The missile surface is also double walled to contain the cooling fluid; the outer wall being porous and cooled by the outflow of vapour produced from the fluid by heating at the outer surface. The cooling fluids may be ether, ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol or water, and may be stored in the device, before heating occurs, by sealing the porous portion with wax.
