Abstract

914,493. Valves. VAILLANT, H., [trading as JOH VAILLANT KOMM.-GES.]. Sept. 14, 1959, No. 31216/59. Class 135. A valve device for controlling gas flow to a gas heater comprises an electromagnet 28 energizable in response to heat provided by a pilot flame of the heater, an armature 18 arranged to be retained by the electromagnet when energized, a main gas valve having a closure member 15 for co-operation with a seat 5, and urged by a spring 16 to the closed position, a coupling 22, 25 connecting the valve member to the armature, and manuallyactuable means 7, 8 for opening the valve so that the valve member is retained in its open position by the electromagnet when energized, the coupling being manually releasable and the manually actuable means being arranged to act directly upon the armature to move the latter into contact with the electromagnet against the action of a further spring 20. As applied to a water heater, the valve member 15 is formed, on the downstream side, with an extension 14 in which a plunger 7 is slidably mounted, a slot 14<SP>1</SP> being provided for a guide key 11 secured to the plunger. An extension 23 is provided on the upstream side of the valve member for the reception of the hook 22 formed on the end of a non-rotatable armature pin 17; the hook is coupled to the extension 23 through a spring clip 25, Fig. 4a, located in a slot 24 in the extension. In operation, when the handle 8 is depressed, the end of the plunger 7 abuts a pin 27 which, in turn, abuts the hook end 22 thereby via the coupling, lifts off the valve member from its seat 5 and also presses the armature 18 against the poles of the electromagnet 28; gas now flows through an inlet 2 and an outlet 6 to a pilot jet, the main outlet 3 being closed by a valve 12. The electromagnet is then energized through a thermoelectric device associated with the pilot jet and, upon release of the handle, the valve 12 is opened and the valve member 15 retained in its open position by the electromagnet. To close the valve member 15 while the pilot jet is still slight, the handle is rotated through 90 degrees, thereby disengaging the coupling and allowing the valve to close under the action of the spring 16.
