Abstract

682,750. Valves. CIPAG SOC. ANON. March 14, 1951 [June 19, 1950], No. 6148/51. Class 135. In a safety valve for a gas burner with a pilot burner and having two main valves, one 1 secured to an armature 3 adapted to be held open against a spring 5 by an electromagnet 7 energised from a pilot-burner responsive element, and the other 2 closing the gas passage until the pilot burner is alight by means of a first operating member 13 which allows it to seat under the action of a resilient member 11 against the action of a return spring 16 and which also opens the first valve, a device 18 locks the operating member in the position in which it opens the first valve until the responsive element is sufficiently heated by the pilot burner and means are provided for allowing the operating member to resume its initial position of rest in which the other valve is opened. When the member 13 is depressed the valve 2 closes the main valve opening 10 and the operating rod 12 continues downwards to open valve 1 while a coned part 15 of the member having one or more shoulders 23 snaps past one or more spring-loaded blades 18 which then abut the shoulders and hold the member in its depressed position. Gas then passes to the pilot burner through opening 24. When the magnet is energised, a spring-loaded member 27 carrying a bevel-ended sleeve 26 is depressed to force the blades apart and through the part 15 press the armature on to the magnet which then holds the valve 1 open. On releasing the member 27, the springs 16, 29, return.the members 13, 27 to their initial position, the rod abutment 17 then holding the valve 2 open. The blades may be unlocked by a pilot burner controlled electromagnet acting after the energisation of the first magnet, or by clockwork mechanism wound up by the member 13. The member 13, 15 may be rotated about its longitudinal axis to engage or disengage the blades. A flexible diaphragm 9 seals the magnet and armature from the gas.
