726,912. Valves. GERSTMAYR, L. A. March 5, 1952 [March 5, 1951; Dec. 21, 1951], No. 5773/52. Class 135. A method and safety device for preventing escape of gas from gasheated appliances in which a slow-acting selfclosing valve, in addition to a main cock, controls the gas supply and a detent mechanism holds the valve open when heated by the burner, the valve being opened by a manual actuator interlocked with the cock to prevent the valve opening except when the cock is closed. With the rotary cock 2 closed a flange cut-out 5 allows the button 4 to be pushed in to open a piston-valve 8 and raise a spring-loaded dashpot piston 11 provided with a disc check valve 15. On release, the spring 10 pushes back the button independently of the valve 8 and the cook 2 may be opened so that gas passes along conduit 7 to the burner. The piston slowly closes the valve 8 but if the burner is lit it heats a thermal bulb the fluid in which acts on a diaphragm or bellows to push a detent 16 into the path of the piston 11 to hold the valve 8 open. In a modification, the valve 8 lies within the cock and carries a coaxial cylinder for a fixed dash-pot piston. A single actuating knob has a hollow stem containing a tension spring for the dash-pot and carrying a valve interconnecting pin moving in slots in the housing and cock. In a further modification, the valve 8 is replaced by a conical valve formed on the dash-pot cylinder and seating on the end of the cock.
