Abstract

710,346. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. ROBERTSHAW-FULTON CONTROLS CO. Feb. 21, 1951, No. 4255/51. Class 135. [Also in Group XI] In a control apparatus, applicable to fluid fuel burning appliances a diaphragm valve is operated by the supply or exhaust of pressure fluid to or from a valve chamber under the control of three valves and two valve operating means. With the diaphragm valve 20 closed, on pressing a button 96 the normally closed contact 106 controlling a solenoid 118 is broken and a contact 108 made to enable the mains L1, L2, to energize an igniter 46 through a transformer 48, and the valve seats 64, 78, are opened by the button through a rod 102 carried by an armature 90 engaging the valves. Gas passes from a pipe 42, passage 150, seat 64 and pipe 34 to a pilot burner 30 which is ignited and heats a thermocouple 84 which energizes an electromagnet 86 to hold the armature 90 in its depressed position, in which position the valve opening the seat 64 closes a seat 66 and a gas passage 152 leading from the passage 150 to the diaphragm chamber 28. The valve for the seat 78 and a valve for a seat 112 actuated by a lever 116 attracted by the solenoid 118 controlled by a room thermostat 50, together control the exhaust of gas from the chamber 28 via passage 148, seats 112, 78, and pipe 36 to a bleed burner 32 for allowing gas pressure in the fuel inlet pipe 12 to open the diaphragm valve. The latter closes if the pilot burner fails and allows fluid pressure from passage 150 to enter the diaphragm chamber via seat 66 and opens and closes under the control of the thermostat 50, and the valve for the seat 112 and seat 114 leading to passage 150. Should the mains supply fail, the valve for the seats 112, 114 has means 126, 128, 142 whereby it may be manually operated but returns to thermostatic control on resumption of the supply. The main fuel inlet cock 14 and the pilot fuel cock 44 may be interlocked.
