Abstract
1,1,3-tris-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)butane is prepared by reacting crotonaldehyde with allyl alcohol and treating the 1,1,3-triallyloxybutane thus produced with a solution of peracetic acid in ethyl acetate.ALSO:Textile fabrics consisting of or containing cellulosic fibres, e.g. cotton, linen and viscose rayon, are rendered shrink- and creaseresistant while imparting to them properties such that, after laundering, they possess a soft smooth finish with substantially no ironing, by impregnating them with an aqueous solution containing 1,1,3-tris-(2,3-epoxy-propoxy) butane and then heating the fabrics to cure the epoxide. The solution may contain 1-30% by weight of 1,1,3-tris-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) butane, 0.01-10% by weight of an epoxy curing catalyst, e.g. magnesium, tin, cadmium, sodium and zinc fluoborates, boron trifluoride etherate, stannic chloride, boric acid, alkane sulphonic acids, aluminium chloride, hydrochloric, phosphoric and oxalic acids, magnesium chloride and sodium, zinc and aluminium sulphates, other polyepoxides, aminoplast resins, e.g. dimethylol ethylene urea, melamine-formaldehyde resins, mono-and dimethyl ureas and methylated methylol ureas, plasticizers, natural resins, textile softening agents and stabilizers. After impregnation the fabric may be dried by allowing it to remain in contact with the air or by heating to 35 DEG -100 DEG C., cured by heating to 120 DEG -200 DEG C. for 30 seconds-10 minutes, scoured with water containing a laundry detergent at 40 DEG -90 DEG C. and then dried.
