Abstract

A film of an olefin polymer or copolymer possessing in the molecule an average of more than 10 chain branches per 1,000 carbon atoms is biaxially extended to at least fifteen times the initial area at a temperature below the crystallite melting point of the polymer or copolymer, to produce a shrinkable film. Preferably, the crystallite melting points of the polymers used are lower than 130 DEG C. Specified polymers include high pressure polyethylene, polybutene-1, and the following copolymers where the first-named material is present in the major proportion:- ethylene-propylene, ethylene-butene-1, and butene-1/propylene. Especially preferred are copolymers of 85-95% ethylene with 5-15% propylene, of 90-98% ethylene with 2-10% butene-1, of 60-80% butene-1 with 20-40% propylene, and 95-98% butene-1 with 2-5% pentene-1, which yield films which, in a water bath at 100 DEG C., shrink from 25-40%. A flat film may be stretched transversely by clamps and longitudinally by rollers, or tubular film may be stretched mechanically in both directions, or by inflation. Films may be made consisting of two or more layers of different polymers (see Group VIII).
