Abstract

1,231,861. Polyolefin films. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 March, 1969 [3 April, 1968; 20 Dec., 1968], Nos. 16018/68 and 60719/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Biaxially oriented films having greater orientation in the longitudinal direction are prepared by extruding and stretching compositions comprising (a) 70 to 95 weight per cent of a crystalline α-olefin polymer and (b) 30 to 5 weight per cent of an additive having a drop softening point above 70‹ C. and which is a terpene resin, hydrogenated hydrocarbon polymer or compatible modified rosin, to form films with a Gardner haze of less than 5%, a 45 degrees specular gloss of greater than 70 and being capable of forming a twist wrap which will retain a twist of at least 0À5. The films may have a higher degree of stretching in a longitudinal direction, which may be imparted by direct stretching or by differential shrinking. Preferably, the films are stretched equally in longitudinal and transverse directions, e.g. by the " bubble " process, and allowed to shrink transversely at elevated temperatures while restrained from longitudinal shrinkage, preferably by passing over heated rollers under conditions permitting controlled shrinkage. The films may be surface oxidized, or may contain antistatic agents, e.g. amines and glycerides, and may be treated with a corona discharge. In examples, compositions comprising polypropylene and hydrogenated poly-#-pinene, optionally with glyceryl mono- and distearates and bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) myristyl amine, are formed into tubular films by the " bubble " method and subjected to differential transverse shrinkage.
