Abstract

914,212. Vehicle couplings. PRESSED STEEL CO. Ltd. Aug. 16, 1961 [Oct . 26. 1960], No. 36700/60. Class 103(5). A road/rail semi-trailer provided with landing legs has a main coupler 21, 22, 23 of the type disclosed in Specification 882,252 which is held in the engaged position by spring-loaded plungers 27, and a second or safety coupler in addition which comprises a horizontally angularly movable yoke 11 slidably supported by a retainer 12 bolted to a structure 10 and having a stud 26 cooperating with the retainer 12, and limbs 14 which may be engaged within slots 15 of the headstock 16 of the other vehicle by spring- loaded plungers 18. Should the main coupler fail in the coupled-up position whilst the landing legs of the semi-trailer are still retracted then the trailer will drop only by the small amount of clearance between the limbs 14 and the slots 15, but this small movement will press back the plungers 18 and through linkage 28 operate the brake valve 24. Similarly, if the main coupler is not properly engaged the plungers 18 cannot register with the notches 19 and the brakes of the vehicle will be applied. The main coupler release mechanism is connected to the plungers 18 in such a manner that when the mechanism is operated the plungers 18 are withdrawn so that the limbs 14 may disengage the slots 15.
