Abstract
Omega-ureido alkanoic acids are prepared by heating an omega-aminocarboxylic acid derived from a saturated aliphatic straight chain monocarboxylic acid having at least 3 carbon atoms with urea in a solvent at 80-120 DEG C., and liberating the omega-ureido-acid from the ammonium salt so formed, e.g. by distilling off NH3 during the reaction, or by the action of mineral acids or cation exchangers on the final solution. Suitable solvents are water, C1-4 alkanols, and their mixtures, increased pressure being used if methanol or ethanol is present. Examples prepare b -ureidopropionic acid from b -alanine, g -ureidobutyric acid from g -aminobutyric acid, e -ureidocaproic acid from e -aminocaproic acid, and 11-ureidoundecanoic acid from 11-aminoundecanoic acid.
