Abstract
Amino carboxylic acids are prepared by treating aqueous solutions of the corresponding lactams with a sulphonated resin cation exchanger and separating the resulting amino carboxylic acid therefrom by treatment with ammonia solution. The process may be carried out continuously and the resulting ammonia solutions of the amino carboxylic acids may be concentrated by repeated use in the separation stage. The aminocarboxylic acids are preferably obtained from their weak ammoniacal solutions by evaporation at low temperature in vacuo. Nuclear sulphonated polystyroles are specified as cation exchangers. The lactam starting material may be dissolved in water alone or in a mixture of water with a miscible organic solvent such as an alcohol. The examples describe the preparation of e -amino caproic acid from e -caprolactam.
