Abstract
913,477. Fused electrolyte electrolytic cells, e.g. for producing Ti. NEW JERSEY ZINC CO. Feb. 10, 1961 [Feb. 19, 1960], No. 5030/61. Class 41. In a fused electrolyte electrolytic cell, e.g. for producing Ti from TiCl 4 , a pervious cathode 8 has an inverted trough-shaped chamber formed by flanges 17 and 10 at its lower end which can be filled with an inert gas such as A or He, and fitted over a flange 12 upstanding from the bottom of the cell to prevent anolyte A and catholyte C from coming into contact in this region. By this means, formation of Ti between the bottom of the cathode and the cell bottom is prevented, the cathode does not become stuck to the cell bottom and can be easily removed for harvesting the Ti. In a modification, the flange 10, instead of projecting inwardly and downwardly, projects outwardly and downwardly. The cathode may be supported out of contact with the cell bottom as shown, or on it. Cl 2 evolved at anode 6 is collected by a cylindrical baffle 15 and removed by an exhaust line 16. The anode 6 may be suspended above the cell bottom as shown or may extend upwardly through it.
