Abstract

676,007. Electrolyte refining of iron scrap. PRIMAVESI, D. Jan. 11, 1949, No. 739/49. Class 41. Iron scrap is electrolytically reflned in a cell which is divided into anode and cathode chambers by partitions of meshed material permeable to the electrolyte but adapted to retain sludge produced in the anode chamber, the scrap being in good contact with positive current-supplying means situated in the anode chamber and the anode reaction during electrolysed mainly consisting in release of iron from the scrap. The meshed material may be fabric of textile material or of a more noble metal than iron. As shown, a cell 1 is provided with a series of chambers 2 carrying iron scrap 4 disposed above current-carrying rods 5 which may be of iron or may be of graphite or other inert material. The sides of the chambers consists of coarse-meshed textile material or metal 3. During electrolysis refined iron is deposited on cathodes 6 which may be of iron or other material suitably treated so that the deposited iron may be readily removed therefrom.
