Abstract

A neutral or alkaline aqueous coating solution contains at least one inorganic or organic compound of phosphoric acid and at least one water-soluble thermosetting synthetic resin. The phosphoric acid compounds specified are phosphate of ammonia, phosphates of organic amines or amides, primary or secondary esters of phosphoric acid preferably containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and zinc phosphates made soluble with ammonia or an organic amine and containing at least 0.03 mol. P2O5 per mol. zinc. The thermosetting resins specified are alkyd resins, phthalate resins, an acrylic polymer modified with a water-soluble melamine resin, phenolic and melamine resins and they should be present in a concentration of at least 1% by weight. The solution may also contain wetting-agents such as 3,5-dimethyl-1-hexyne-3-01 and ditertiary acetylene glycols, pigments such as red iron oxide and TiO2, siccatives such as organic manganese driers, and minor proportions of solvating agents and organic solvents such as butyl alcohol and lower alcohols, bentonite and thickening agents. Hexavalent chromium as ammonium chromate may also be present and the concentration of the phosphoric acid compounds is preferably 0.05 to 5% (as P2O5) by weight. The solutions are used for coating Fe, steel, Zn, Cd, Al, and Mg at room temperature and after drying the coating is stoved at 100 DEG to 200 DEG C.
