Abstract

913,167. Gas turbines. ENTWICKLUNGSBAU PIRNA VEB. April 28, 1959, No. 14396/59. Class 110 (3). A cooling system for the rotor discs of gas turbines operating at high temperature, having a cover-plate coaxially associated with each rotor disc except that of the first stage to provide a cavity between itself and the rotor for the reception of a coolant has each rotor disc provided with an axially extending hub on which the cover disc, which is of a diameter about 80% of the associated rotor disc, is mounted. The rotor discs 6, 23 have their upstream faces covered by plates 16, 24 to form coolant spaces 17, 25. The plates 16, 24 are press fits on hubs 6a, 23a. The plates have web members at their outer periphery which co-operate with the rotor discs to form slits 18, 26 for the exhaust of the cooling air. Cooling air from the compressor is led to an annular chamber 13 from which it is led through tubes 21, 31 to the spaces 17, 25, respectively. The walls of the tubes 21, 31 are provided with apertures 22, 32 supplying cooling air to the rear faces of the discs 6, 23. Leakage air 43 is used to cool the front face of the rotor disc 5.
