In a baling press a sliding cover E is actuated by a mechanism which forces it on to its seat with a wedging action, the cover and its actuating mechanism F being connected by a device allowing sliding movement perpendicular to the direction of movement of the cover such that inaccuracy in their alignment will not affect the seating of the cover. Material to be compressed is introduced into the press box A and a pneumatic ram F is actuated to force the wedge shaped cover E beneath the plate G so as to form a tight fit with the edges of the press box A The ram F is connected to the cover E by a sliding joint comprising a crosshead H sliding in a slot in cover E. The sliding surfaces may be of antifriction material or may have a roller mounted between them.
