Abstract
Isoprene is obtained by demethanising a C6 fraction, or a C6 fraction derived therefrom, obtained by dimerising propylene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of or comprising a lamellar complex of an alkali metal and carbon. The dimerisation is effected as described in Specifications 912,822, 912,823, 912,824 and 912,825. The product is fractionated to separate 2-methylpentene-2 which is demethanised. Alternatively the C6 product or a fraction thereof is isomerised and the isomerisate demethanised; unconverted C6 material is separated by distillation and recycled to the isomerisation or the isomerisate is fractionated to remove 4-methylpentene-2 which is returned to the isomerisation. Isomerisation is effected over silica/alumina or clays at 150-300 DEG C., over sodium on alumina at -150 to 150 DEG C., over phosphoric acid or pumice at 150-300 DEG C. or with heteropoly acids at 50-300 DEG C. Demethanisation is effected by pyrolysis at 600-1,000 DEG C. for 0.001-1 second in the presence of up to 10 mols of steam per mol of feed.
