Abstract

Specific methylpentene isomers are obtained by dimerizing propylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal and carbon under conditions favouring production of isomer A, distilling to separate a fraction rich in isomer A and an isomerization feedstock, isomerizing the latter under conditions favouring the production of isomer B (which may be the same as A) and distilling the isomerization product to recover a fraction rich in isomer B, the remainder being recycled to the isomerization. Dimerization is effected as described in Specifications 912,822 to 912,825. Distillation is effected in columns of at least 60 theoretical plates, e.g. about 100; where isomers A and B are the same the two distillations may be effected in the same column. Isomerization is effected over silica-alumina or clay at 150-300 DEG C., sodium on alumina at 0-150 DEG C., supported phosphoric acid at 150-300 DEG C. or heteropoly acids at 50-300 DEG C. An example describes the preparation of 2-methylpentene-2 (A and B).
