Abstract

Tertiary butyl acetate is prepared by reacting isobutene with acetic acid at a temperature in the range 0 to 100 DEG C., in the presence of an acid-activated silicate. The isobutene may be pure or admixed with other hydrocarbons. Fuller's earth, montmorillonite, bleaching earth, clay, or kaolin activated with a mineral acid such as sulphuric or hydrochloric acid are specified and the reaction may be continuous or batchwise. The t-butyl acetate may be recovered by filtration and distillation.
