Abstract

The invention comprises 4-chloro-3-sulphamoyl-benzanilides of the formula <FORM:0912060/IV (b)/1> and non-toxic alkali-metal salts thereof, wherein R is hydrogen or a C1-3 alkyl group and R1 is a phenyl or substituted phenyl (e.g. methyl-, methoxy-, chloro-, bromo-, fluoro-, methoxycarbonyl-, carboxy- and trifluoromethyl-substituted phenyl) and their preparation by reacting 4-chloro-3-chlorosulphonylbenzoyl chloride (obtainable by treating p-chlorobenzoic acid with chlorosulphonic acid and thionyl chloride) with one equivalent of an aromatic amine R1R.NH and treating the resulting 4 - chloro - 3 - chlorosulphonylbenzanilide with ammonia. Pharmaceutical preparations having diuretic and natriuretic properties comprise the above compounds in admixture with a solid or liquid carrier for example in the form of tablets or injectable solutions. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 882,090.
