Abstract

911,902. Making cans; transferring blanks. BLISS CO., E. W. Feb. 6, 1961 [Feb. 12, 1960], No. 4433/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A can body blank feed apparatus comprises a frame, a horizontal reciprocating feed, one or more work stations and an oscillating stop member with a vertical component of movement timed in relation to the reciprocating feed to stop each workpiece in register with a work station. The apparatus comprises a frame 13 with projecting ledges 15 on each of which slides a feed bar 16. A wear plate 26 runs the length of the machine. A drive shaft 30 and crank disc 32 are connected by a link 33 to a lever 38 which is clamped to a rocker shaft 39. Also clamped to the shaft 39 are two levers 40 which are connected by links 46 to the feed bars 16. Each bar 16 has a number of recesses to receive feed dog assemblies 56. Each assembly comprises a feed dog 55 mounted by a cylindrical end 67 in an insert 61. The dog is biased by a spring 63 to a position in which a vertical face 69 projects above the feed bar 16. The insert has a tongue 60 which bears against a shoulder 59 and at the other end has a lip which runs under the feed bar. The spring 63 permits the feed dog to yield when the blank is stopped by a stop member. At each work station 10, 11 or 12 is a spring-loaded friction shoe which clamps the body blanks during the dwell in the feed. The stop members 115 are each bolted to a bracket 112 and the brackets are adjustably mounted on a carriage 108 which has a parallelogram support formed by two links 106 and 106a pivotally mounted on the frame. The link 106 is clamped to a shaft 105 which also carries a lever 101. Mounted on the end of the lever is a cam follower 100 which rolls in a cam groove 96. The cam 90 is bolted to the lever 40 so that the movements of the feed dogs and the stop members are synchronized. In the position shown in Fig. 1 the clockwise rotation of the lever 40 has moved the dogs 55 to feed the body blanks forward and the stop members 115 have been raised to stop the blanks at the work stations. During the subsequent anti-clockwise rotation of the lever 40, the dogs 55 are depressed against the springs 63 and slide under the body blanks, and the stop members are withdrawn downwards.
