Batches of envelopes are forwarded against wrapper bands which are folded rearwardly about opposed batch front edges, the batches then operating devices which fold the band ends into overlapping relation on their trailing faces. Envelopes are delivered by wheels 1 as described in Specification 708,612, against spring pivoted holding members 14, 19 and are counted by photo-electric means 27, 54. When the desired batch has collected, the counter causes operation of an electro-magnetic one revolution clutch, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), whereby a wrapping cycle is initiated. Pusher bars 74 movably cyclically by crank means 57-61, 63, 64, 67, thrust the batch against a band B, the latter being fed from a supply 76 by rollers 84, 100 and being severed at or just before contact with the batch, by knife means 127, 142. At the same time, the member 133 bearing the moveable knife displaces a ball valve 131 to permit a spot 144 of adhesive to be placed on the band. The band is located for pick-up by the batch by fork arms 147 of spring biased latch members 145 pivoted in plates 9 and 10 defining the path of travel of the batch, the batch engaging the sloping surfaces of the arms to pivot the latches out of its path. Latch surfaces 149 fold the band about the top and bottom faces of the batch and when the latter has cleared the latch steps 150, the latches snap inwards to fold band extensions d, e on to the trailing face. The steps 150 are displaced slightly longitudinally to ensure sequential folding down of the extensions. An oscillating member 162 pushes forwards the upper edge of the batch to ensure its clearing the upper step. As each batch is pressed against that preceding it, so pressure is applied to the overlapped extensions to cause adhesion. The machine is fully adjustable for different envelope and batch sizes.
