Abstract

1,270,871. Patching veneer sheet. BLACK CLAWSON CO. 1 July, 1969 [17 July, 1968], No. 33278/69. Heading B5L. A method of patching a sheet of veneer comprises feeding the sheet along a predetermined path, sensing a defect within the sheet while it is moving along the path, cutting and removing a predetermined portion of the sheet containing the defect while the sheet is moving along the path to form an opening of predetermined configuration within the sheet, and inserting a patch within the opening while the sheet is moving along the path. Apparatus, Fig. 1, for carrying out the method includes drive rolls 48, 108 and 225 and cooperating rolls 38, 112, and 208 respectively for feeding the veneer sheet along a table 30, and a plurality of patching stations 35 arranged in groups which are disposed along the path of the sheet with the patching stations in each group laterally offset relative to those in the other group(s) so as to cover the whole area of the sheet. Each patching station includes cutter wheels 70 each of which is rotated on energization of a respective clutch 65, an air nozzle 125 controlled by a solenoid valve, and a magazine 135 containing patches. In operation of the apparatus the sheet is fed by rolls 38, 48 over a sensing device 255 which, when it senses a defect, causes the appropriate patching station to be operated. As a result the clutch 65 is energized to cause the wheel 70 to rotate through 180 degrees and cut a portion B, Fig. 4B, from the sheet. When the cut portion reaches the air nozzle 125 the valve thereof is operated so that the cut portion is blown into a shoot 244 and on to a conveyer 235 to leave a hole H, Fig. 4C, in the sheet. As the sheet advances an air cylinder 215 is energized to move a slide which removes the lowermost patch from the magazine and inserts it into the hole H. The patch is pressed into the hole by a solenoid operated plunger and by engagement with a spring blade as the sheet advances. The patch P, Fig. 4D, is a push fit in the hole but may be held therein by heat-sensitive adhesive which was originally applied to its edges and then activated after insertion.
