Abstract

1,265,524. Envelope patch applying apparatus. BERKELEY MACHINE CO. 3 July, 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 33597/69. Heading B5D. In order to apply window patches 41 to moving envelope blanks 2 having leading and trailing flaps and a patch receiving portion therebetween (Fig. 2), the speed but not the rate of succession of the blanks 2 is reduced so that adjacent flaps preferably partially overlap to leave the patch receiving area exposed (Fig. 2). Blanks 2 are fed from a suction cylinder 8 along a path 7 through a patch applying apparatus 1 comprising a blank speed reducer 10, a window gumming station 24 and a patch cutting and applying mechanism 37. The reducer 10 comprises a pair of transverse rollers 14 which co-operate with fork-mounted backing rollers 18 to brake the blanks received from a suction cylinder 9 and a compressed air nozzle 23 which raises the trailing flap of each blank to permit a squamaform blank lapping (Fig. 2). The station 24 comprising glue applying rollers 30, 29, 28 and the mechanism 37 comprising feeding 38, cut-off 40, transfer 42 and patch applying 36 mechanisms co-operate with a suction impression roller 32 for the application of patches 41. An underlying portion of a preceding or succeeding blank may extend into a window opening to permit greater overlap and the trailing edge of the preceding may ride below the leading edge of the succeeding blank.
