Abstract

1,027,850. Bookbinding. SMYTH MANUFACTURING CO. March 8, 1965 [Nov. 30, 1964], No. 9670/65. Heading B6A. A tubular back-lining is applied to a bookfiller 10, Fig. 4 (not shown), by first attaching to the filler back a flat strip 16 of lining paper and subsequently attaching to the strip 16 the infolded edges of a second strip 42 of lining paper. The operations are carried out in a machine comprising devices 12, Fig. 1 (not shown), for carrying the fillers 10, back upwards, through the machine. At a first station 14 in the machine, glue is applied to the backs by a roller 15 with a concave paripheral surface. At a second station, a conveyer 18 applies the flat strips 16 to the back, the strips being fed singly from a stack or, as shown, being cut by a knife 34 from a web 26 of paper. Before reaching the knife 34, strips of head-band material 22 are adhered to the web 26 by glue applied to the web by rollers 32. After a further step forward, glue is applied to the edges of the backs by inclined discs 38. At the final station 40, a conveyer 44 applies the outer strips 42 so that the infolded edges 52 adhere to the lines of glue applied by the discs 38. The strips 42 are formed by passing a web of paper through devices 50 which form the infolds 52 and then cutting the web by a knife 54 to provide strips 42 of the required length.
