Abstract

1396572 Applying window patches to envelope blanks F L SMITHE MACHINE CO Inc 16 Aug 1972 [26 Aug 1971] 38237/72 Heading B8F In a machine for applying one or more window patches to envelope blanks, the blanks are fed from a feed roll 23 to a panel cutter roll 14 rotating in abutment with a back-up anvil 18 and having suction devices 24 for holding the blanks and knives on dies 20, 22 for cutting window portions in them; they are then fed via transfer roll 28 to the patch severing and applying apparatus 30. A web 36 of window patch material is drawn by pull rolls 38, 40 from roll 32, and fed to an adhesive applicator 42, which takes adhesive from a gum box 46 and applies it to selected portions of the web 36 via rolls 44, 50 working in conjunction with back up rolls 52, 54. The web 36 is then fed to a vacuum roll 58 where it is severed into appropriate lengths by a knife blade 72 mounted in a slotted portion 70 of the roll 58 and a knife blade 76 mounted on a roll 74 rotating adjacent the roll 58. The transfer roll 28 rotates at the same speed as the vacuum roll 58 and the envelope blank B on the former is transferred to the latter in superposed relationship with the patch P which is adhesively secured to it by the force of the suction and by pressure between the rolls 58 and 28. In the event of there being no envelope blank the patch P is removed from the vacuum roll 58 by a vacuum roll 114 having a patchdislodging device 118 and a glue scraper 122, and is deposited in a receiver 120. The envelope blank is then transferred via roll 78 to a second patch applying apparatus 80. This has a segmented roll 82 which applies adhesive from a gum box 86 to the envelope blank on a back-up roll 90. A vacuum bar 83 transfers the patch to a roll 112. A patch P 2 is severed from a web 110 by knives 106, 108 on a vacuum roll 102 which is similar to the vacuum roll 58 and is applied to the envelope blank by pressure between the roll 112 and the vacuum roll 102. The envelope blanks are then processed to form envelopes. The rolls 78, 58 and 114 may have a coating of self-lubricating polymeric material. The patch severing and applying apparatus 30 may easily be disconnected by severing the web 36 from the pull rolls 38, 40.
