Abstract

1432044 Binding webs EASTMAN KODAK CO 30 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 25761/73 Heading B8T [Also in Division B5] A method of severing a web 10, Fig. 1, fed over a winding drum 24 to terminate formation of a first roll 12, Fig. 2, wound at station B and transfer the severed leading end on to a rotatable core 14 to form a second roll comprises the steps of moving said core 14 from the transfer station A to the winding drum 24 to form a nip through which the web passes, driving the core to bring it up to the web speed, positioning a tear strip 40 having a greater strength than that of the web and feeding said tear strip into the nip, whereby a leading edge 44 adheres to the core and a central adhesive portion severs the web along leading edge 45 of the strip and winds the leading end of the web on to the core. The tear strip is carried by a support sheet 48 to which the strip is attached by an adhesive having a lower adhesion to the sheet 48 than the strength of adhesion of the strip 40 to the web 10. The sheet 48 is carried on an orthogonally movable table 52, which is moved axially with respect to the drum 24 to dispose the sheet below the web 10 and then radially towards the nip to feed the preferably overhanging sheet 48 into the nip. The tear strip 40, Fig. 6, is made of polyethylene terephthalate and is coated on both sides with differently strong adhesives, the adhesive with the weaker bond being used to attach the strip to the carrier sheet 48. A leading portion 44 attaches an associated tear strip end to the core. In a modification two strips are used in a V-shaped formation and the free ends of the strips are provided with two portions (44<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7).
