Abstract
911,323. Fluid-pressure brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. June 7, 1961 [June 29, 1960], No. 22701/61. Class 103 (1). A brake anti-skid mechanism anti-surge damper comprises a cylindrical shuttle having an axial flow restricting passage, the shuttle being movable by a spring in one direction to open a non-restricting passage and in the other direction in response to surge to close the second passage and divert the flow to the restricting passage. A shuttle 1 is slidable in a bore in an anti-skid mechanism housing 3, the bore being formed of a small diameter part 4 and a large diameter part 5 joined by a taper portion 6, an outlet 7 intersecting the junction of the parts 5 and 6. The shuttle is fluid - tightly slidable under the action of a spring 16 in the bore 4 and has an enlarged head of greater diameter than the bore 5 with which a conical seating 8 can form a shut-off valve. The head of the shuttle is received in a cavity 12 in a cover 11 having a fluid inlet 14, and has radial slots 25 allowing flow to the bore 20 of the shuttle which contains restrictor plates 21 having alternate central and off-set holes 22a, 22b. Longitudinal slots 24 are formed in the small diameter part of the shuttle and communicate with the bore 20 by holes 19. Under normal conditions the spring 16 holds the seating 8 away from the end of the bore 5 and fluid can flow from the inlet 14 through cavities 12 and 5 to the outlet 7. On the occurrence of surge in the fluid supply, the shuttle moves against the spring to shut the cavity 5 and flow is restricted to passing through the restricted bore 20, holes 19, slots 24 and cavity 5 to the outlet 7. The damper may be incorporated in the anti-skid unit or may be in a separate housing inserted in the supply line.
