Abstract

911,224. Making tiles. WILSON'S CAVICRETE Ltd. April 9, 1959 [April 9, 1958; May 7, 1958; Sept. 17, 1958], Nos. 11152/58, 14569/58 and 29710/58. Class 87(2). A tile, comprising a plate-like body of a moulded setting material having on its surface a veneer of a granular material, is made by applying lubricant to a flat plate 11, applying the wet mix 16 to the approximate desired tile thickness over the oil, levelling or squaring the mix following the edge of the plate, and throwing granular material on the upper surface of the mix 16. Preferably a rubber sheet 12 with an uneven under surface is first laid on the plate 11. The sheet 12 also has recesses 14 on its top surface to produce studs on the underface of the tile. After the edges 17 of the mix 16 have been bevelled by a trowel, wet granular material is thrown on its surface, followed by dug granular material which draws out moisture and stiffens the layers. The surface is then grooved by applying blades 23, the grooves being given a divergent section by first covering the surface with a cloth 22. Full penetration is prevented by a stop. The tile is hardened, preferably by steam jets, and the rubber sheet is stripped and surplus granular material brushed off. Dyes may be incorporated in the granular or setting material, or in both. The tiles may be cast on curved plates. Specifications 911,225 and 911,226 are referred to.
