Abstract

[Also in Group XXXV] In an electromagnetically maintained balance assembly wherein the balance carries a coil which co-operates with two oppositely magnetized permanent magnets, the permanent magnets have cross-sections so shaped and orientated with respect to the coil that the three voltage pulses induced in the coil as the balance swings in one direction are of substantially the same amplitude. In the first example, Fig. 3, the permanent magnets A and B have cross-section of generally rectangular shape with curved ends and are so located that the sum of the magnet areas overlapped by the coil Sp in the mid-position of the balance is substantially the same as the greatest area of one of the permanent magnets overlapped by the coil as the balance swings. In another example, Fig. 4, the coil Sp is of rectangular shape and co-operates with the permanent magnets A and B.
