Abstract

910,203. Controlling nuclear reactors. SOC. INDATOM. April 29, 1960 [April 29, 1959], No. 15123/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXX] Apparatus for controlling the axial position of an absorbing rod 4 of a nuclear reactor comprises racks 15 . . . 20 secured to the stem 5 of the rod 4 and engaged by hydraulically - operated jacks 6 . . . 11 which are arranged in oppositely disposed pairs, the operating cycles of the pairs being staggered by one-third of a cycle. Each jack comprises a movable portion 21 having triangular teeth 26 which are adapted to mesh with similar teeth on the adjacent rack, the engagement of the teeth being produced by fluid, preferably oil, under pressure, and disengagement by a spring 23. A rotary distributer successively feeds oil through conduits 12, 13, 14 to jacks 6 and 9, 7 and 10, 8 and 11, respectively. The immediate free dropping of the absorbing rod, so that it may act as a safety rod, may be obtained by opening a bypass valve in the control circuit and thereby freeing all the jacks of pressure. Alternatively, the jacks may be pneumatically or electromagnetically operated. Two racks only may be employed.
