Abstract

938,662. Closures for resisting fluid pressure. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Nov. 7, 1960 [Nov. 7, 1959], No. 38156/60. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] A closure means for a furnace having a thick cylindrical wall 1 and a thick end wall 2 of heat resistance steel and adapted to operate at high pressures and temperatures comprises a door 3 of the same steel which is closed and held in the closed position by a hydraulic jack comprising a plunger 4 located in a bore 6 in a bed 7 and an actuating rod 5 arranged on the axis of the cylinder, the rod 5 being screwed into the plunger and having mounted upon it a resilient return device consisting of resilient conical discs 20. The bed 7 has a hydraulic fluid inlet conduit 27 leading to the bore 6. A hydraulic jack is provided for moving the cylinder in a transverse direction clear of the door to a region in which charging may be performed. Heating is effected internally by electric resistors 28 arranged along the furnace wall. The furnace is particularly suitable for carrying out the high pressure canning of uranium rods for use in nuclear reactors. In another embodiment the hydraulic jack may be situated at the closed end 2 of the cylinder, closure being effected by urging the furnace against a fixed door.
