Abstract

Chlorofluoroalkanes are prepared by reacting a fluoroalkane with substantially anhydrous chlorine, the reaction being induced by gamma radiation, preferably of intensity 104-107 reps. Preferred conditions are a temperature of between -30 DEG C. and 200 DEG C., and a pressure from atmospheric to 1500 p.s.i.g. 1,1-Difluoroalkanes are preferred. Specified fluoroalkanes are 1,1,1-trifluoropropane, 2,2-difluorobutane, 2-fluoropropane, 3,3-difluoropentane, 1,1 - difluorobutane, 1,1 - difluorohexane, 1,1-difluoroethane, 1,1-difluorooctane and 1,1-difluorodecane.
