Abstract

1,171,202. 1,1,1,2,2 - Pentafluoro - 3 - chloropropane. E. R. SQUIBB & SONS Inc. 14 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966; 10 Aug., 1966], No. 6935/67. Heading C2C. 1,1,1,2,2 - Pentafluoro - 3 - chloro - propane is prepared by reacting 1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane with chlorine at a temperature of at least 250‹ C. and/or in the presence of U.V. radiation, no more than 1 mol. chlorine per mol. pentafluoropropane being used. The thermal reaction is suitably effected at 250- 600‹ C. optionally in the presence of a solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride or pentafluorotrichloropropane. The photochemical chlorination may be effected at - 78‹ to 100‹ C. using as a U.V. source, e.g. sunlight, U.V. light, mercury vapour light or black fluorescent light. In Example 2, a thermal process, some 1,1,1,2,2 - pentafluoro - 3,3 - dichloro and 3,3,3 - trichloropropane are obtained as side products.
