Abstract

1297392 Perchlorination of hydrocarbons STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 10 Oct 1969 [11 Oct 1968 3 Sept 1969] 49796/69 Heading C2C Carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene are prepared by the vapour phase thermal perchlorination of saturated and/or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons (containing no more than 4 carbon atoms) and/or partially chlorinated derivatives thereof, under substantially anhydrous conditions at a temperature of from 475<SP>‹</SP> to 700‹ C. and a pressure of from 60 to 200 p.s.i.g. to produce a vaporous effxuent comprising hydrogen chloride, chlorinated hydrocarbons and unreacted chlorine, quenching the effluent, passing the cooled gaseous material to a partial condensation zone at a pressure of from 60 to 200 p.s.i.g. and a terminal temperature of up to 55‹ C. to condense the chlorinated hydrocarbons therefrom, withdrawing a gaseous material containing HC1 and Cl 2 from the partial condensation zone and optionally passing it to a hydrogen chloride and/or chlorine-consuming reaction zone.
