Abstract

909,958. Induction heaters. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., and GENERAL ENGINEERING CO. (RADCLIFFE) Ltd. March 28, 1961 [May 23, 1960], No. 18140/60. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group V] A heating and cooling unit adapted to be fitted to the cylinder 2 of an injection moulding machine comprises a non-magnetic sleeve 1, e.g. of non-magnetic stainless steel, surrounding the cylinder, the sleeve having an inlet 4 and outlet 3 for cooling fluid, e.g. water, at the same end of the sleeve, an electrical induction heating coil 5 mounted on the sleeve 1 by sliding it thereover from the end remote from the fluid inlet and outlet, and an external housing 6 enclosing the coil 5. The coil 5 is wound on a former (not shown) in layers 21 to 25 interleaved with flexible insulating material 26. The wound coil is removed from the former and insulated by a lapped winding of insulating tape 27. A series of such units is mounted on the cylinder 2, and each sleeve is spaced from the cylinder by radial flanges 8. Sealing rings (not shown) are enclosed in the spaces between the cylinder 2, flanges 8 and axial flanges 9, and are compressed therein by means of spacers and bolts (not shown) threaded on the cylinder 2, to prevent leakage of the cooling fluid. Baffles (not shown) ensure uniform circulation of the cooling fluid and a thermocouple may be fitted in the cylinder 2 for automatic temperature control.
