909,838. Sound-deadening walls. STANKIEWICZ, A., [trading as STANKIEWICZ CHEMISCHE ERZEUGNISSE, ALOIS]. Feb. 18, 1959 [Feb. 20, 1958], No. 5683/59. Class 20 (4). A sound-deadening flexible heavy partition wall comprises as an essential member a slab formed from a flexible solidified carrier material in which there is uniformly distributed a finelydivided loading material so as to cause the coincidence frequency to be displaced into a higher frequency range, the slab being attached to or supported by a substantially rigid support member so that at least a major part of the slab is in a substantially flat condition when in use. The carrier material is a synthetic plastic material, a natural polymeric material such as rubber or a bituminous material such as bitumen, asphalt or pitch. The loading material is a heavy metal, a heavy metal compound or a heavy mineral, e.g., bismuth, lead, a bismuth salt, a lead salt, cinnabar or heavy spar. The slab may be fixed on one side to a flexible mat formed from a synthetic thermoplastic material, a textile fabric or felt. In one embodiment the slab 1, Fig. 2, is fixed to a sheet metal wall 4 with a layer 3 of felt interposed therebetween. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the slab is spaced away from a sheet metal wall so that a free air space exists therebetween. In further embodiments the slab is clamped in a rectangular frame which may or may not be longitudinally and transversely subdivided, Figs. 4, 5 and 6 (not shown). In a further embodiment the sound-deadening wall comprises a screen in which the slab 1, Fig. 7, is attached at one end to a shaft 15 which may be rotated in either direction to wind or unwind the slab 1 on to or off the shaft 15.
