Abstract

A compound comprising synthetic plastics material, for example polyvinyl chloride, natural highly polymeric materials or bituminous material loaded by at least an equal amount of finely divided heavy metal, heavy metal compound or heavy mineral is applied to a wall or wall element so as to cause its coincidence frequency to be displaced into a higher frequency range, the modulus of elasticity of the coating material being less than one hundredth of that of the building material from which the wall or wall element is made, the weight of the wall or wall element being increased by at least 65% as a result of the application of the coating material. The compound may be applied to the wall or wall element directly by spraying, trowelling or brushing or may be mounted on a pliable backing, for example of paper or jute, textile or glass fibre fabric which is fastened to the wall or wall element as by adhesive. The loading material may be bismuth or lead or a compound thereof, or heavy spar or cinnabar. The wall or wall, element may comprise metal, wood plaster, wood wool cement, asbestos cement or polystyrene foam.
