Abstract

909,361. Crimping fibres. HEBERLEIN & CO. A.G. July 21, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 25499/60. Class 120 (3). In a process for crimping continuous filaments (including filament bundles and filaments of rectangular cross-section) of thermoplastic synthetic material e.g. polyamide, polyester, vinyl polymers or copolymers, by converting the filaments partially into the plastic state lengthwise under tension on a surface portion of narrow width and subsequently relaxing the tension, a temperature gradient is produced within the filament (whilst it is under tensile stress) perpendicular to the longitudinal axis thereof with the aid of energy obtained from a fluid medium e.g. the hot gases of a (oxy-acetylene) flame, atomic hydrogen, a plasma jet, a stream of hot gas such as hydrogen or helium as may be contained in a closed cycle, or a liquid. The gradient may be produced in a filament which has not been subjected to any, or only partial, cold-stretching for the purpose of molecular orientation, and the cold-stretching completed after the processing. The crimp may be fully developed by an additional heat treatment e.g. with hot air, steam or hot water, of the filaments in relaxed condition.
