Abstract
908,824. Two-part couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. Aug. 8, 1960 [Sept. 1, 1959], No. 27441/60. Class 38 (1). In a separable two-part connector, the plug part consists of an electrically insulating body having a plurality of aligned parallel electrically insulating fingers projecting therefrom with a plurality of blade-like contact members supported on the body and projecting between successive fingers, whilst the socket part consists of another electrically-insulating body having an elongated laterally extending opening adapted to receive the fingers of the first part and housing a plurality of socket contacts to make electrical connection with the respective contact members of the first connector part. In the two-part connection shown, for flat strip cables having cores 15 and covering 12 (Fig. 2), the first connector part (Figs. 3, 6) consists of an electrically-insulating body 19, of tough inflexible plastics material, having a transverse slotted wall 21 and a plurality of partitions 24 on its upper surface. The outer surface of the wall 21 is extended in fingers 28, in line with the respective partitions 24, whilst a plurality of horizontal blade-like contact-members 29 are fixed between adjacent fingers and partitions in grooves provided in the walls thereof, the inner ends being anchored in depressions 36. The bared cable cores are passed through diagonal slots 35 and soldered on to the contacts 29, the cable being kept in position by means of flexible push-on cover 39 which may be filled with potting material. The second part of the connector (Figs. 4, 8) also comprises an insulating body 45 having partitions 49 and a wall with a rectangular socket opening 50. Bifurcated socket contacts 54 corresponding each to one of the contact members of the first connector part, are inserted, in line between the partitions 49, in the opening 50 in grooves 53, until stopped by shoulder 52, whilst being retained by tang 60 on the contact member bearing against the side of the respective partition. The cable cores are again soldered on to the end of the socket contact passing through diagonal slots 46, and the cable retained by cover 61. A plate 40 hinged to the first connector part and provided with hooks 44, to latch into grooves 65 in the second connector part, is used to hold the two parts together when the fingers and contact members are inserted in to the rectangular opening and the latter are gripped by the respective socket members. An 0-ring 32, is placed on the finger projections to act as a sealing-ring.
