Abstract
908,806. Air-cooled surface condensers. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUHLERGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM.-GES.]. Aug. 20, 1959, No. 28533/59. Class 64 (3). In a surface condenser in which cooling air is forced over a plurality of finned tube groups connected in parallel to a supply of steam to be condensed therein, means are provided to cause steam of approximately equal amount and pressure to be supplied to the inlet header of each tube group and to be so distributed amongst the tubes of each group that in all the tubes condensation is completed near the point where the tubes lead into the condensate collecting chamber, more highly cooled tubes receiving correspondingly more vapour. In Fig. 6, such steam distribution is effected by baffles 18 in the steam inlet header 16 of the tube group. These baffles which need not be of the same kind in all the tube groups, are spaced apart and project into the steam supply conduit 6 by a distance which increases in the direction y of steam flow. In Fig. 8 a baffle 20 having apertures 21 therein of progressively decreasing size in the direction of air flow X over the tubes 13 is provided in the steam inlet header of the tube group. Fig. 7 shows a further form in which nozzles 19, diaphragms or other throttling means are provided at the inlet ends of individual tubes 13. Fig. 3 shows a preferred arrangement of the tube groups in a condenser, the tube groups being arranged in banks 7, 7a each connected to a branch 6 of the main steam supply pipe (not shown) and cooling air being blown upwardly over the tubes by independently operable fans 9. The pitch or angle of the fan blades may be adjustable to vary the quantity of air delivered by each fan. To provide for a uniform flow of steam, the steam supply to the branches 6 may be through a ducts reducing in cross-sectional area in stages from the steam source. The branches 6 may also be of decreasing area in the direction of steam flow.
