Abstract

<PICT:0907882/IV(a)/1> A process for treating fibrous material comprises exposing the material to an electric ionizing discharge for a controlled period of time. The process is said to improve tensile strength, bursting strength, wear resistance and resistance to kinking. Apparatus for carrying out the treatment comprises a sealed enclosure 1 containing a pair of electrodes 2 with a stabilizing device 3 therebetween and a vacuum pump 14 for exhausting the enclosure. A voltage generator 9, 10 excited by control transformer 15 delivers an output to a step-up transformer 12 which is connected with the terminals 5 of the discharge device. A relief valve 8 enables the internal pressure to be released at the end of the treatment and a control valve 7 and a pressure gauge 6 are fitted on the container. A modification includes means for continuously passing material through the container whilst it is subjected to the treatment. The treatment of polyacrylonitrile material is described.
