Abstract
907,524. Treatment chambers. VICKERS RESEARCH Ltd. July 26, 1961, [July 29, 1960] No. 26507/60. Class 81 (2). An apparatus for treating patients, such as by X-rays, under a pressure greater than atmospheric comprises a chamber having a shell of transparent material with end caps, one of which is removable to serve as a door. Gas is fed into the chamber to provide the desired pressure. In the form described, the shell 1 is made from two concentric cylinders of transparent acrylic resin, the space between them being almost completely filled with glycerol and, while one end cap 3 is permanently attached to it, the other 4 is made to close against a ring 9 and to be secured in position by nuts 11 on tie rods 10 extending from the cap 3. The cap 3 is mounted on two wheeled supports and there is a single such support below the ring 9. The cap 4 has two wheeled supports and also is attached to a couch running on rails extending along the length of the chamber 1 so that the patient can be conveniently placed in the chamber or withdrawn. An oxygen cylinder is used to supply gas under pressure to the chamber and a control panel provides valves and switches for determining the maximum pressure to be applied and the rate of increase and decrease of pressure. These are effected by a motor-driven valve arrangement, see Fig. 5 (not shown), in which an electric motor applies increasing or decreasing pressure through a spring to a relief valve associated with the chamber.
