In a method of and apparatus for raising or lowering a column of liquid, such as mercury in a McLeod gauge, a bulb 7, filled with a pure gas such as argon, oxygen, krypton, xenon or carbon dioxide, is connected by a tube 5 through a needle valve 6 to a space above mercury 4 in a reservoir 3 and is provided with a finger 8 which can be cooled, such as by liquid nitrogen, or heated to vary the gas pressure exerted on the mercury 4 to vary the mercury level in a column 2.
