Abstract
The invention comprises a ,b -di-[5,6-dimethylbenzoxazolyl-(2)]-ethylene of formula <FORM:0907819/IV (b)/1> It may be prepared by condensing 1-hydroxy-2-amino-4,5-dimethylbenzene at elevated temperature in the molecular proportion of 2:1 with fumaric acid, aspartic acid or malic acid, or a functional derivative thereof, cyclizing the product by heating in the presence of a boric acid catalyst and further heating the product when malic or aspartic acid is used as starting material to eliminate water or ammonia respectively. The product is a brightening agent for organic materials, e.g. p lacquers and synthetic fibres.ALSO:A new compound a ,b -di-[5,6-dimethylbenzoxazolyl-(2)]-ethylene of formula <FORM:0907819/IV (b)/1> may be used as a brightening agent for synthetic fibres, for example, of cellulose esters, polyacrylonitrile, polyamide or polyvinyl chloride. It is particularly useful for brightening polyester fibres, especially those of terephalic acid polyglycol esters. Preferably the compound is applied in the form of a fine aqueous dispersion using as dispersants, for example, polyglycol ethers of higher alcohols or ortho-alkyl phenols. In an example poly-ester fibres are treated in a bath containing 0.1% of ammonia with a paste prepared from the new compound, an adduct from ethylene oxide and a mixture containing mainly C18 saturated fatty acids, and water.
